It seems like everywhere we turn these days, there is a new organization or campaign that is working towards making the world a better place and bringing light to all of the beautiful differences that each individual carries. Isn’t it awesome? We can choose to focus on the negativity in the world, or we can choose to concentrate on the ways each of us can contribute in a positive way and leave people feeling loved, accepted and included. The Joseph Maley Foundation does just that for our youth; giving them the light to shine in whatever their abilities may be.
The Joseph Maley Foundation is an Indianapolis-based nonprofit, established in 2008 to honor the legacy of Joseph Maley. Joseph was born in 1990 with a myriad of disabilities. He accepted those around him with unconditional love, and inspired everyone to be their best selves. Joseph died at eighteen from leukemia. In the spirit of his total acceptance, his parents started the Joseph Maley Foundation with the mission, “serving children of all abilities.” JMF works primarily with central Indiana youth in preschool through twelfth grade to build acceptance of individuals of all abilities through nine programs that engender compassion and respect for the diversity of life. The Joseph Maley Foundation served more than 20,000 children in central Indiana with our programs in 2015.
One of their most exciting moments came earlier this year when they participated in the Brackets For Good of Indianapolis tournament, advanced to the FINAL round, and WON the entire event!
As an organization that immerses themselves in their community, it’s no surprise that they are developing their marketing efforts. We have had the pleasure of working with JMF over the past 3 years and have truly enjoyed watching their awareness spread, their events grow and their mission be heard. We have cherished their partnership with Distinct Images and how they’ve used it to build their brand, and were able to learn more about that side of their organization in a little Q&A…
DI: How do you find promotional products valuable for your organization?
JMF: Having promotional products and JMF gear helps create a visual identity for our organization. It is fun to see a group of students wearing JMF shirts while participating in Service Day or to see a Joseph Maley Foundation sticker.
DI: What has been the most popular or fun promo product you have done at Joseph Maley Foundation?
JMF: Our favorite and most popular item is definitely our embroidered quarter-zip pullover. We also had shoelaces made, which are very fun!
DI: Have you seen an increase in brand awareness due to your distribution of promotional products?
JMF: We are still a fairly young organization so while the promotional products definitely help, I do not know that we can pinpoint an increase in brand awareness yet. The consistent look and feel of our color palette within different product pieces is definitely helpful in cultivating a strong brand identity.
DI: What types marketing strategies does Joseph Maley Foundation use year-round to keep the name circulating and increase awareness of your services?
JMF: We approach our marketing in a fairly grassroots way. While we are engaged with our supporters on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram), our best marketing comes from our program partners – namely schools and organizations – who share their positive JMF program experiences with their contemporaries. We are fortunate to be supported by amazing individuals who are passionate about what we do to serve children of all abilities, and as such are honored to talk about our programs with others they think might be inspired and interested in what we do, too.
DI: What makes all those involved with JMF proud?
JMF: One question we ask a lot at the Joseph Maley Foundation is “Why JMF?” It’s the question that prompts our staff, board, supporters, and program partners to share what brought them to our organization, what aspect of a program they found particularly meaningful, or why they are passionate about serving children of all abilities. JMF was established to honor Joseph Maley’s legacy, and in our efforts to do so we are a collection of these amazing moments.
