Hopefully most of you are counting down the days until Thanksgiving, a time spent with family and to reflect on all of the blessings around. However, we would be fools if we didn’t accept the fact that many of you are counting down the days until Black Friday, when the stores open early and the deals are plenty. Everyone has their something, and if camping out in front of big box stores is your shtick, then carry on. But our hope is that if shopping and deal-searching is your M.O. after the turkey plates are clean, that you support and participate in the newest material-driven shopping day as of November 27, 2010 know as Small Business Saturday. This day encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local, and we find that to be our preferred way to go, too.
According to a survey by the Institute for Local Self-RelianceAbout, $52 of every $100 spent goes back into the community when consumers shop at a locally owned business. That’s amazing! Especially compared to an estimated $14 of every $100 spent that is returned when a consumer shops at a big-box chain.* Local organization Be Indypendent has been a huge supporter, advocate and promoter of Small Business Saturday and they encourage everyone to be an INDYPENDENT.
What is an Indypendent?
An INDYPENDENT is a supporter of the Indypendently-run businesses and happenings that make Indy what it is.
How can I find Indypendently-run businesses?
Before you run to a chain for dinner or new shoes, use the new Independent We Stand mobile app to find locally owned businesses around you.
From Mass Avenue to the heart of downtown and up in Fishers, the number of locally run and operated small businesses grows by the year and it’s up to each of us to keep their whimsical charm, unique assortment and high-quality products part of our community.
